Looking Up to Albuquerque:
The 2019 National Convention

By Chris Allen, HE 95-40580, President, Desert Division           Fall 2018

At an elevation of 5,312 feet, the host city for the 65th National Convention is a place we hope you will all join us in looking up to, in more ways than one!

First, simply in geography, Albuquerque sits over five thousand feet higher than the warmest parts of Desert Division and the hot Sonoran Desert, offering wonderful views and opportunities to enjoy this unique Southwest gem.

New Mexico is known as the "Land of Enchantment," and the Rio Grande Chapter is working hard to enchant all members who attend the convention next June 22 to 30.

Hotel Albuquerque is the host hotel, quite unique and comfortable. It's located a short 3-minute walk from historic Old Town, where you can find shopping and dining that distinguishes the area.

C & T.

Tours will feature everything from the # 1 rated scenic railroad in Colorado and New Mexico, the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, seen above, to historical Indian Pueblos, and the famous "Secret City," Los Alamos. Of course, we will have several tours to historic and colorful Santa Fe. With its unique handicrafts and hidden treasures, whether you're looking for concho belts, or silver and turquoise jewelry, you'll find that and so much more in Santa Fe.

Sandia.Located at a higher elevation than Denver Colorado, you will be able to take the longest tramway in North America to Sandia Peak and view 11,000 square miles of the Rio Grande Valley from an elevation over 10,300' high. The base of the tramway is within the city limits of Albuquerque and located at an elevation of 6,559', yes Albuquerque can really be called the other Mile High City!

Keep an eye out for the convention tours and registration form coming in January. The folks in the Rio Grand Chapter and Rio Grande Chapter Desert Division are hard at work, committed to making this convention a real "high."

Can't you see yourself enjoying the comfort and serene setting in the Hotel Albuquerque, while having fun with trains and fellow members?

In the meantime, mark your calendar! June 22 to 30, 2019.
