European toy trains began their Prewar era from 1868-1942.  In the U.S. the Prewar era applies to the beginning of Lionel train production in 1901 through 1942. The wartime military production from 1942 until 1944 required that metals and other essential wartime material be set aside for that purpose. 

Manufacturers include Lionel, American Flyer, Marklin, and Ives.  Other manufacturers also produced toy trains and accessories.
